This settlement, which covered 3.0-liter diesel vehicles produced by VW, supplemented an early agreement concerning 2.0-liter cars. Both were outgrowths of allegations that the company cheated on emissions testing. In this case VW agreed to repurchase vehicles from customers at an estimated total cost of up to $4 billion. Bosch, which manufactured the device that enabled to cheating, was said to be making a contribution toward the cost of the buyback but no amount was cited in the announcement.
